Dennis Tyner
WAXHAW, NC- Dennis “Butch” Tyner, died Monday August 26th, 2024 peacefully at home under the care of his loving family. He was born on Sunday January 17, 1943, in Munising, Michigan to the late Leo and Irma (Sommerville) Tyner. He graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1961.
Immediately after graduating he entered the Basilica and National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians at Holy Hill in Hubertus, WI as a Friar. Dennis was a Postulant at the Monastery in WI. He made his Simple Profession at the Monastery in MA. He entered into the United States Air Force REGAF on October 1, 1965, and honorably served until May 13, 1970. During his military career, he was stationed in Libya, Northern Africa, a testament to his courage and commitment to his country. Following his service, Dennis reentered the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites at the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Brookline, MA.
In 1972 Dennis began a life of public service and dedicated 33 years to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. His devotion to his faith was further exemplified through his active membership in the Knights of Columbus.
Butch had such an extraordinary impact on all he came across. He was genuine in his acceptance of all and had a way of spreading love and light everywhere he went. His interests were as varied as they were heartfelt; he found joy in gardening, walking, baking, reading, and prayer. Above all, the joy of his life was his grandson, Gavin Thomas Irvin, born on June 11, 2021.
Dennis is survived by his loving family: his son Noah Tyner and wife Willow Tyner, his daughter Sara Irvin and husband Thomas, and his cherished grandson Gavin Thomas Irvin. His former wife and dear friend Gayle Becker. He is also survived by his brothers, Gary McQuisten and wife Marie, Theodore (Teddy) Tyner, his sister Shelley Davis, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Irma Sommerville Tyner, his brother Thomas (Tommy) Tyner and sisters Catherine Nash and Iris Bugg, his sister-in-law Margaret Tyner, and his best friend and former Franciscan Lawrence Darlington.
A funeral to celebrate Dennis’s life will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in the Daily Mass Chapel on September 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization close to Dennis’s heart.
Dennis Leo “Butch” Tyner’s legacy of love, service, and faith will forever be remembered by all who were blessed to know him. His life dates, January 17, 1943 – August 26, 2024, bookend a remarkable journey that touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on the world.
