Robert Haara
SKANDIA TOWNSHIP MI- Robert “Bob” Armas Haara, aged 81, of Skandia Township, MI, passed away on August 20, 2024, at UP Health System Marquette. Born on January 2, 1943, the son of Hilho and Gloria (Koski) Haara, Bob was a man whose life was as rich and vibrant as the Upper Peninsula’s forests he so dearly loved.
Bob’s early years were spent in Skandia, where he was raised with the values of hard work and community spirit that would define him. A proud graduate of Bishop Baraga High School in 1961, Bob immediately entered the workforce, dedicating himself to a local sawmill. His industrious nature shone through every task he undertook. Bob’s life was brightened by his marriage to Shelia Arkens on August 20, 1977, a union that would be filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams until her passing. After their wedding, Bob worked for various sawmills before transitioning to SSI Janitorial for two years, eventually finding his long-term career with the Marquette Board of Light and Power, as an Oak Operator, he was known for his unwavering reliability until his retirement in 2005.
Bob’s interests were as expansive as the great outdoors he cherished, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In his early years he was a member of the UP Chiefs biker club, reveling in the camaraderie and freedom of the open road. His love for nature extended to leisurely rides along backroads, where he would sightsee and appreciate the beauty of his surroundings.
Retirement brought new hobbies and passions into Bob’s life, notably coin collecting, which he pursued with the same zest he applied to all his endeavors. The casino was a favorite destination, where he enjoyed the thrill of the game and the company of friends.
Above all, Bob was a family man. His granddaughters were the apples of his eye, and he cherished every moment spent with them. His love for cooking was another way he expressed his care for his loved ones, often preparing meals that brought everyone together.
Those who knew Bob will remember him as a man full of ‘sisu’–a Finnish term for stoic determination, bravery, and resilience. His compassionate nature and concern for others were as evident as his strength of will. Friends and family will miss his beautiful blue eyes, which reflected the depth of his character and the joy he found in life.
Bob’s legacy is carried on by his children, George and Raymond Haara, and daughter Roberta Haara, all of Skandia; his former son-in-law, Phillip Betker; grandaughters Hannah and Lauralee Haara; step-grandson, Zach Gaines; his sister, Marylin Vost; sisters-in-law, Maureen Haara and Deb Arkens; and several nieces and nephews who will continue to honor his memory.
Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Shelia; his parents; brothers, Ted and David Haara; sisters, Joy Tousignant and Cathy Holmgren; and his in-laws, Harvey Arkens and Bernadette Borrett.
Bob Haara was a beacon of selflessness and love, a man who put his family first and worked tirelessly for the well-being of those around him. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will forever be a guiding light in the lives he touched.
As we bid farewell to Bob, we reflect on a life well-lived, a journey marked by dedication, joy, and an unwavering commitment to the values he held dear. His story does not end here; it continues in the memories we share and the love that endures. Rest in peace, Bob; your legacy will never be forgotten.
