Douglas Treado
ROANOKE, VA- Douglas Scott Treado passed away on May 11, 2024 at the age of 83. He was born to Lucille Webb Treado and Howard Claud Treado of Marquette, Michigan on December 13, 1940.
After graduating from Bishop Baraga High School, Doug went on to attend Cornell University and was a spectacular distance runner and all-around athlete. His studies were interrupted by his time training for the Olympics and volunteering in one of the earliest Peace Corps missions to Senegal, where he coached athletic teams for the 1963 African Games and the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964 as well as focused on communications development on the Island of Goree. He then went on to work for the International Rescue Committee, assisting political prisoners out of South Africa. He was one of the first African project directors in Bechuanaland. Doug also went on to study multiple master’s programs at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Northern Michigan and the University Geneva-Switzerland. His primary interests were African studies, cultural anthropology, sociology, history, civil rights and education. Throughout his life, he held multiple jobs in universities and nonprofit organizations working to improve social justice and preserving history.
By the mid 1970’s Doug took on the alias Freeman Zygote, and was living in Santa Cruz, California as an art agent. He promoted the careers of friends such as Futzie Nutzle, Henry Humble, Phil Hefferton and Linda Atkinson. I believe a great amount of debauchery and fun was had.
Doug was a father to Katharina Frohlich (Martin Vavra) of Vienna, Austria; Nathalie Hehle Treado (Didier Hehle) of Geneva, Switzerland; and Lucy Treado (Eric Wise) of Virginia, USA. He loved his daughters very much.
He is survived by his younger brother Alvin Treado (April Treado) and a tremendous number of Treados in the Northern reaches of the US. He was very proud of his grandsons Nikolaus and Philipp, his many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and was always prepared to update you on all their lives.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, his brothers Howard and William, and his sister Rosemary.
A celebration of his life will be held in Marquette Michigan at Holy Cross Cemetery at 10 am on September 7th, 2024.
