William Johnson
OKEMOS, MI – William Roy Johnson, age 83, passed away Monday, July 8, 2024, at Bickford of Okemos Assisted Living Facility in Okemos.
A man of unwavering dedication and selfless spirit, William was born on October 21, 1940, in Marquette, MI, a son of Thure and Evelyn (Baragwanath) Johnson. This remarkable man will leave behind a legacy of service, love, and laughter. After graduating from John D. Pierce High School in 1958, William embarked on a journey of service, joining the US Air Force. His five years in the military were marked by commitment and courage, particularly during his time in England as a member of the security force. It was there that he met Carol Lenell Patterson. The couple married in August of 1963.
Upon his honorable discharge, William’s desire to serve his community led him to the Marquette City Police Department. His tenure there was brief, as he soon joined the Flint Police Department. This calling to protect and serve culminated in a distinguished career with the Michigan State Police, starting in 1966. William was instrumental in establishing the Michigan State Police’s UPSET Program for the Upper Peninsula, a testament to his innovative spirit and leadership. He retired as a Detective Lieutenant in 1991, leaving behind a professional legacy that would inspire many.
William’s life was not solely defined by his career; he was a man who cherished the simple pleasures. His love for being with family, helping neighbors, golfing, fishing, bowling and tending to his apple trees reflected his deep appreciation for the world around him. He was the epitome of hard work, family orientation, and a playful prankster who could light up a room with his welcoming nature and easy friendship.
His selflessness was a quiet force; William was always doing good deeds for others, never seeking credit or recognition. His actions spoke volumes, touching the lives of many and leaving an indelible mark on his community.
William is survived by his ex-wife, Carol; his daughter, Mary Johnson of Okemos, MI; daughter-in-law, Sandy Johnson of Mattawan, MI; and his beloved grandchildren, Kelsi (Matt) Hiester, Colin Johnson, and Corick Johnson. His memory will also be cherished by his sisters, Pat (Mike) Shimon, Mary (Richard) Constance, Marcia (David) Franti; and brother, James (Leslie) Johnson, along with several nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and humor.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, Rick Johnson; his brother, Ronald Johnson; his sister, June Wales; and his brother-in-law, Richard Ellis.
William Roy Johnson’s life was a testament to the values he held dear: selflessness, hard work, and family.
As we bid farewell to a man who was a beacon of kindness and integrity, we take comfort in knowing that William’s story is not one of an end but a lasting influence that will continue to guide and inspire. He was a man who made the world a better place, simply by being in it. His memory will be held in the hearts of those who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
