Jack Seder

GWINN, MI- Jack Scott Seder, 74, of Gwinn, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 17, 2024 at UP Health System Marquette.

Jack was born August 30, 1949 in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from Grand Blanc High School in Grand Blanc, Michigan in 1967, and later attended Northern Michigan University where he earned degrees in business education, including his Bachelor of Science in 1971 and his Master of Science in 1979.

While completing his degrees at NMU, Jack met the love of his life, Karen Jean Aartila, of Kalamazoo, Michigan. They were married in her hometown on September 20, 1975.

Professionally, Jack was employed in the automotive industry in the area of transportation management, including over 20 years with General Motors. His career brought the family throughout the Midwest, including the cities of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Flint, Michigan; Buffalo, New York; and Canton, Michigan. Jack and his family spent most summer vacations in the Gwinn area, fostering his deep love for the Upper Peninsula. A fortunate job opportunity with Mead Paper Company allowed Jack and his family to relocate to Gladstone, Michigan in the spring of 1993, an event he and Karen always considered a true blessing.

Jack was passionate about the outdoors. He especially enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, and riding his ATV down countless backcountry trails. A staunch supporter of Gwinn and the surrounding community, Jack was hoping to earn a spot on the Board of Education for Gwinn Area Community Schools this coming fall. Jack’s hobbies also included supporting Detroit sports teams, following NASCAR, and spending time at Little Shag Lake in Gwinn. A proud patriot, Jack also volunteered as a Certified Election Inspector for Forsyth Township.

Jack is survived by his children: Daniel (Sarah) Seder of Escanaba, Kathryn (Josh) Meyette of Gladstone, and John (Krysta) Seder of Gladstone; grandchildren: Aylah, Josalyn, Sophia, Jackson, Rowan, and Briggs; siblings: Linda (George) Dyball, of Fenton, Michigan, Gayle Latreille, of Naples, Florida, and Clifford (Nancy) Seder of Swartz Creek, Michigan; and beloved companion, Donna Bates of Loganville, Georgia.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; and his mother, Vonna Horwood.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held from 3-5 pm on Tuesday, July 30th, at the Up North Lodge in Gwinn. In lieu of flowers, the family would be thankful to have donations forwarded in Jack’s memory to the Gwinn Community Schools Alumni Fund. This can be done via the Community Foundation of Marquette County website (cfofmc.org) under the “Giving” and then “Give Now” tabs.
