Sylvia Louise Lasich

MARQUETTE, MI- Sylvia Louise Lasich, age 75, of Marquette, entered eternal life Friday, May 31, 2024, at home in the loving, comforting care of her family.

Sylvia was born August 6, 1948, in Dearborn, Michigan, a daughter of George Michael and Louise Frances (Vencek) Smrtka.

She attended St. Valentine Elementary School, Ladywood High School, and Schoolcraft College where she met her husband, Guy, at a Catholic Campus Ministry Christmas party in 1966. Their very first dance was to “Moon River”ù which became their song. They were married in 1969 at St. Valentine Catholic Church just six days after Guy returned from a year in Vietnam.

Sylvia’s life was a combination of joys and sorrows. Her father died suddenly when Sylvia was just 13 years old and she took on the responsibility of caring for her brothers and the family home. She and Guy raised and treasured their five children and welcomed her aged grandmother into their home the last years of grandma’s life.

Sylvia’s faith and family were precious to her. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral where she served on the Stewardship Committee. Through the years she served as a school room mother, trip chaperone, Eucharistic Minister, Right to Life counselor, served on the parish council, and was a Cursillo team member and enjoyed it all.

She also enjoyed knitting, baking, and especially being a wife, mother, and grandma, making a home for her family. She was a skilled, and competitive, card player who loved nothing better than beating Guy at a game of cards.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 55 years, Guy; her children, Guy Lasich and Kathryn (Dion) Krysmalski and their children, Sophia and Joseph of Marquette, Michael (Nicole) Lasich and their daughter, Alexia Snowden of Champion, Geoffrey (Elizabeth) Lasich and their children, Mitchell and Norah of Marquette, and John (Kari) Lasich and their son, Forrest of West Ishpeming; brothers, George Jan Christian) Smrtka of Troy, Gerald (Doris) Smrtka of Sun City, AZ, Gene (Barbara) Smrtka of Livonia, and Geoffrey Smrtka of South Lyon; sister-in-law, Doris Smrtka of Sun City, AZ; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and paternal grandmother, Julia Kopp.

Honoring her request, private family services were held at St. Peter Cathedral and interment was made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
