Richard H. Johnson

MESA, AZ – Richard (Gunner) Johnson, 86, passed away on April 23, 2024 in Mesa, AZ.

He was born in Stambaugh, MI on September 1, 1937 to Elizabeth and John Johnson. The family moved to Negaunee when he was 3. He graduated from Negaunee High School in 1955 and Michigan Technological University in 1959 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He married Delores (Durfee) in 1964 and they remained married for 60 years until his passing. His career in the Mining Industry spanned 4 decades and 5 companies.

He is survived by his wife Delores and daughters Cynthia De Vine, Patricia (Scott) Blomquist, and son Gregory Johnson. He had three grandchildren, Mackenzie and Keaton Blomquist and Nicholas De Vine. He is also survived by his nieces Cynara (Todd) Pierzina, Lori Durfee, and nephews Mario Cima Jr., Richard (Ricky) Durfee, Joseph Dufee and Peter Durfee.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean Cima and his nephews Thomas and Arnold Durfee.

His career took him to many states but he always returned to the UP to deer hunt and fish and was always proud to be called a Yooper. He was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan and a Detroit Tiger baseball fan.

A graveside service will be held on June 15, 2024 at 1pm in the Negaunee City Cemetery.
