Martin L. Dolan

COEUR D’ALENE, ID – Martin L. Dolan, age 86, died July 31, 2023 at his home in Coeur d’Alene, D.

Born October 5, 1936 in Minneapolis, MN, Martin made his home in Marquette and Deerton, MI from 1968 through 2019.

Martin moved to Marquette as a faculty member in the History Department of Northern Michigan University. Teaching from 1968 to 1976, he developed many American History courses, including Intellectual and Cultural History, and Historical Thinking and Writing. In addition to academic advising he also served on many faculty committees.

Martin, Transfer Admissions Counselor and Community College Coordinator in the Admissions Department from 1976 to his retirement in 1997, traveled three states meeting with students at their area schools to help align course selections for the upper level majors they would pursue when transferring to NMU.

Over the years Martin was active in a variety of community organizations including the National Ski Hall of Fame, Ishpeming Ski Club, Marquette Ski Club, Trout Unlimited, U.A.W. Administrative/Professional Union Local 2178, and the Onota Twp Planning Commission.

His well read library constantly expanded with new releases on the Founding Fathers, sociology, history, American and English literature, jazz and classical composers, musical instruments, and fishing.

Martin was an avid flyfisher who also enjoyed tying flies and building flyrods for himself and others. Reading, playing the piano, listening to jazz and classical music, cross country skiing, attending NMU women’s volleyball games, driving his STI at Road America, and enjoying sunsets at the family home on the shore of Lake Superior ranked high on his recreation list.

He is survived by Delores, his wife of 64 years; daughter and son in-law, daughter in-law, son-in-law, three grandchildren and grandson in-law.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings and two children.

Inurnment took place in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
