MARQUETTE, MI- Katherine Joan “Kay” Quinn, 89, of Marquette, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 30, 2024 at U.P. Health System-Marquette.
Kay was born on May 25, 1934 in Negaunee, Michigan, a daughter of the late Morgan H. and Myrtle M. (Hawke) Quinn. She attended St. Michael Catholic Grade School and was a 1952 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and also received a Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Michigan University in 1972. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph where she spent 34 years. She taught school in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, Champaign, Illinois, Denver, Colorado, Kingsford and Negaunee, Michigan.
After teaching school for 25 years, Katherine studied at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, receiving certification in Clinical Pastoral Education. She then worked as a Catholic Chaplain at Cole Hospital in Champaign, Illinois. She returned to Marquette in 1986 where she was employed as the Catholic Chaplain at Marquette General Hospital for eight years. She was hospice certified. After working at MGH, she then worked as a Teacher’s Aide for Marquette Area Public Schools, retiring in 2003.
In retirement, Kay was very devoted to St. Peter Cathedral and served as cantor at the 8 a.m. daily Mass for over 20 years.
Kay is survived by three sisters, Helen Kurcz, Frances (Robert) Dupras and Carol (Jerry King) Larson-King all of Marquette; brother-in-law, Walter Aument; also numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, including special niece, Karen R. Larson of Marquette. Preceding her in death besides her parents was a brother, Morgan Quinn; sisters, Dorothy (Pete) Lemire, Patricia Aument, Marion (Ed) Boyle, Marjorie (Tom) Enwright, and Barbara (Joseph) Levandoski; also a brother-in-law, Barry Kurcz; niece, Constance Enwright also nephews, Edward Boyle, Jr. and Timothy Boyle; nieces, Helen Louise Quinn, Constance Enwright, Virginia Quinn Duchow, and Patricia Quinn Gruenke.
Visitation will take place in the Bishop’s Room of St. Peter Cathedral on Thursday, May 9th beginning at 12 Noon until the the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter Cathedral at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. A celebration of life luncheon will immediately follow at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home, 526 N. Third St, Marquette. Rite of Committal will take place on Friday, May 10th at 12 Noon in the Negaunee Cemetery on the Quinn Family plot.
Pallbearers will be Karen Larson, Augie Gentz, Gabrielle Gentz and Lars Gentz.
