H. Marlene Mongiat

NEGAUNEE, MI- Marlene Mongiat, 85, longtime Negaunee resident, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, April 30, 2024 at Teal Lake Assisted Living, under the care of her loving family and Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.

Marlene was born February 7, 1939 in Republic MI to Frank and Hilda (Harmala) Kumpula. She attended Republic schools and later earned her GED equivalency. She was proud to later return to school and get her high school diploma, in which her children were able to watch her graduate. She married the love of her life, John ‘Jack’ Mongiat Sr., on May 25, 1957 and together they raised their five children in Negaunee. She was a loving and devoted homemaker to her family.

Marlene was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming. In her spare time, she enjoyed camping with family and friends. She also enjoyed going to the casino with her husband. Her love of Italian food was visited quite often including Casa Calabria, Mama Mia’s and Villa Capri. Her love of the Big Boy was visited quite frequently while residing in Marquette and the staff all knew her by name. Another frequent place to eat was Peggy Sue’s and Sherri’s Restaurant Ishpeming. She also loved having her hair done by Lisa at The Clipper Salon, Ishpeming, and Greta at Teal Lake Assisted Living.

Surviving are her five children: John ‘Taisto’ Mongiat, Jr. of Negaunee, Deborah (Randy) Sundell of Howell, MI, Julie (Ron) Ames of Fort Worth, TX, Sandy (Stacy) Bess of Boyd, TX, and Jason Mongiat of Marquette; seven grandchildren: Jonna Emanuelson, Nicole Hawkins, Shawna Gleason, Danielle Olszta, Randy ‘Tarm’ Sundell, Jr., John Nault, and Jake Mongiat: 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Julia ‘Dodo’ (Frank) Svoboda; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, John ‘Jack’ Mongiat, Sr. in 1995, her siblings: Reino, Bertha, Elaine, Cora Mae, and Ronnie, and her beloved sister, Adele Tresidder who passed in December, 2023.

Marlene’s Family would like to extend a special thank you to Teal Lake Assisted Living of Negaunee and their caring, wonderful, compassionate and supportive staff. Also, to the care and dignity that Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice of Marquette accompanied during her final days. The care that was received from UP Health Systems Marquette and UP Health System Bell Ishpeming.

Marlene’s family would also like to extend a special thank you to the family at StayBridge Suites, Marquette.

Honoring Marlene’s wishes, no public services will be held. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
