Carl J. Beyne

MARQUETTE, MI – Carl John Beyne, age 85, of Marquette, a cherished husband, father grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed peacefully on May 19, 2024 at Trillium House in Marquette, in the loving care of his family.

Carl was Born on August 10, 1938, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A son of the late Ferdinand Beyne, Carl’s life was marked by dedication, service, and the joy of hands-on pursuits.

Carl grew up in Grand Rapids, where he graduated from Godwin Heights High School in 1958. Following his graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1958 until 1963. It was during his military service at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base where he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Whybrew) Beyne, on December 30, 1961. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, celebrated over 62 years of marriage.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Carl transitioned to civilian life with grace and enthusiasm. He worked as a projectionist for the Delft Theater and furthered his education by attending Northern Michigan University. Carl and Elizabeth settled in Marquette, where they raised their family and became integral members of the community. In July of 1966, Carl began his career with the City of Marquette as an Engineer Aid, a role he held with distinction until his retirement after 33 years of dedicated service.

Carl’s interests were as varied as they were engaging. An avid outdoorsman, he relished the time spent fishing and hunting, often sharing tales of his adventures with anyone who would listen. His dexterity with his hands was legendary; he was affectionately known as Mr. MacGyver for his ability to fix things. He repaired small engines, built and fly model rockets and cut gems. Carl’s love for cribbage, gardening, and his regular walks to Baby Cakes Muffin Company were well-known among his friends and family. His zest for life was evident in his constant activity; he was always busy, always creating, always fixing.

To those who knew him, Carl was the epitome of friendliness and handiness. His warm demeanor and willingness to lend a hand made him a beloved figure in his community. His stories, often filled with humor and wisdom, will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.

Carl leaves behind a loving family: his wife, Elizabeth; his children, Darlene (Gregory) Gagnon of Marquette, MI, Robert (Jennifer) Beyne of Beavercreek, OH, Janet Gonsalves of Riverside, OH, and Sara Beyne of Ceres, CA. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride. Carl’s extended family includes many nieces and nephews, one sister, two brothers, and two stepsisters, all of whom will cherish their memories of him.

Carl was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Evelyn Beyne, his biological parents, and his twin brother, Donald Williamson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Altrusa Hospitality House 1116 Mason Street Green Bay, WI 54301, and the Trillium House 1144 Northland Drive Marquette, MI 49855, two organizations that reflect his spirit of community service and care.

Carl’s life was a tapestry of hard work, love, and laughter. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched with his kindness and in the beauty of the natural world he so deeply appreciated. He will be remembered not just for the things he did, but for the warmth and friendship he extended to all. Carl John Beyne’s story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved.
