Verna Holmgren

ISHPEMING, MI – Verna Holmgren, age 102, longtime Ishpeming resident passed away on Saturday April 13, 2024, at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where she had resided for the past 2 months.

Verna was born in Ishpeming, MI on May 13, 1921, a daughter of the late Flossie (Heard) and Herbert F. Stansbury. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1939. Verna worked for many years at the H.W. Gossard Co. as a seamstress until its closure in 1976.

Verna was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, where she had been active with the United Methodist Women and was a longtime participant in the Pasty making crew. She was a former member of the Wawonowin Country Club and had enjoyed golfing until she was 99 years old. Verna also played bridge in local bridge clubs. She loved to sew and could make just about anything you could imagine, along with showing her artistic side doing oil paintings. She had also been a member of the Larkin Club.

Verna is survived by a son, David “Lu” (Mary “Cookie”) Holmgren of Ishpeming and two daughters, Joan (Bruce) Nelson of Negaunee and Julianne (George) Quayle of Ishpeming, grandchildren, Hope (Tom) Carlson, Tonilee (Kurt) Cullison, Heidi (Russell) Dionne, Heather (Mark) Richardson, Tammy (John) Carlson, Annette (Bob) Junak, Ron (Kara) Hanlon, numerous great and great great grandchildren, and a niece Pam Mahany.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband Wilfred V. Holmgren on Sept. 12, 2006, a sister Shirley Thompson and 2 great great granddaughters.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00-1:00pm on Tuesday April 23, 2024, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm on Tuesday with the Rev. Scott Sherrill to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A light desert and coffee social will follow the services in the church hall. Verna’s service will be livestreamed at facebook.com/WesleyUMCLovesIshpeming/.
