Timothy Pokela

MUNISING, MI – Timothy Paul Pokela, 56, passed away from natural causes on April 2, 2024.

Born on January 6, 1968 in Munising, Mi, Tim started life in humble and neglectful circumstances which ended when he was placed in foster care and adopted at the age of two by Marian (Ihamaki) and Urho Pokela of Traunik, MI.

Diagnosed with a severe hearing impairment, Tim attended ISD classes through Marquette Public Schools, graduating in 1988 from Marquette Senior High. He also attended summer sessions at Bay Cliff Health Camp throughout his school years and was a member of Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham, MI.

After high school, Tim spent several summers as a “Fudgie” working at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. He spent a couple of years in Wyoming before relocating back to the Upper Peninsula, living at Cherry Creek Housing Complex in Harvey with his beloved Siamese cat, Spirit.

Tim was known for his quick wit and exceptionally keen eye for details others often missed. His interests included artwork, reading, movies, and games. He had an affinity for the history of President Lincoln and the Civil War, and locally for Granite Loma.

Tim leaves behind siblings: Jill (Jack) Korhonen, Deane (Ruth Ann) Pokela and Marty (Phyllis) Pokela, all of Alger County, and his many nieces, nephews, friends, and godparents Anne and George Balko.

The family wishes to acknowledge the many people and professionals who invested in Tim’s life. Starting with our parents who took on a special needs child after their childbearing years and seeing him into adulthood, Tim’s passing has caused us to reflect and marvel on the ‘Village’ that provided him their support, encouragement, services, and friendship enabling him to enjoy successful communication skills and independent living as an adult.

Public graveside services will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
