Bertha Jean Benson

MARQUETTE, MI – Bertha Jean Benson, entered eternal life on Friday, March 29, 2024, surrounded by her family in Marquette, Michigan.

Born in the town of Gladstone, Michigan, on April 25, 1934, to the late Charles Erfourth and Ida (Burdick) Erfourth, Bertha’s early years were filled with the simple pleasures of small town life. She was a proud graduate of Gladstone High School, where she forged lifelong friendships and developed a spirit of resilience and independence. After high school, Bertha ventured to Milwaukee seeking new opportunities and experiences. During this time, she worked at Briggs & Stratton Factory, demonstrating a strong work ethic and dedication.

Bertha’s heart was full of love, and she was blessed to share her journey with two wonderful men. Her first marriage was to Robert J Lewis Sr., whose memory she cherished even after his passing. The loss of Robert motivated Bertha to attend the Skill Center at Northern Michigan University and obtain a certificate in secretarial skills. Upon graduation she worked at Peninsula Sanitation and the Marquette Veterinary Clinic, where she enjoyed meeting people and their animal friends.

Destiny smiled upon her once more when she met and married Walter G. Benson Jr., with whom she shared many of life’s joys. In her leisure time, Bertha enjoyed going to camp and fishing with Walter. She loved playing cards (pinochle, canasta and spades) and going to ceramics where she was able to show her artistic talents.

Bertha’s grandchildren were the apple of her eye, and she treasured every moment spent with them from playing games to having heartful conversations. She loved taking the grandchildren to the park and anywhere there was water. Many memories were made at Presque Isle where Mackinac Island ice cream cones were always enjoyed! Bertha’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was an active and devoted member of the Altar Society at St. Michael Church. Her presence will be deeply missed.

Bertha’s legacy is carried on by a loving family: her children, Brenda (Pete) Popps, Sherry (Darryl) Branham, Darrin “DJ” Benson, daughter-in-law, Tracey Lewis; and her cherished grandchildren, Britnee, Joe, Brad, Chelsey, Amber, Cale, and Jessica, along with six great-grandchildren who brightened her days. She was greeted in heaven by her son, Robert Lewis Jr.; five sisters: two brothers and both of her husbands.

Friends and loved ones are invited to celebrate Bertha Jean Benson’s life on Saturday, July 13th, at St. Michael Catholic Church. The visitation will begin at 10:00 am, leading up to the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am, with Rev. Greg Heikkala officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Parish Center, where stories and memories of Bertha will be shared and cherished.
