He played cards in several different leagues and at the Ishpeming Senior Center. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and a member of the VFW and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

August was married to his loving wife Pauline for 54 years before she preceded him in death in 2003. He is survived by his children Jeanne (William) Cox, Rosemary (Tom) Stern, Mark Baggiore, and Don Blemke; his grandchildren: Jennifer (Shawn) Dumphy, Sara Martin, Brad (Kara) Cox, Jimmy (Angie) Hytinen, Jonathon Baggiore, Heather (Michael) Smith, Rebecca Stern (Josh); his great-grandchildren: Anna, Emily, Logan, Ayla, Zachary, Bennett, Reave, Liviana, and Lincoln; his sister-in-laws: Janet Genord and Jean Baggiore; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and special neighborhood friends Nicole and Travis Barlock and their sons and Rachael and Ben Janofski and family.
