Roger Lee “Rocky” Schofield
ISHPEMING, MI- Roger Lee “Rocky” Schofield, age 66, of Ishpeming, walked on Monday, January 29, at his home.
Born March 28, 1957, in Marquette, a son of Daniel G. and Mary T. (Kishketog) Schofield, Rocky was raised in North Marquette, a true “swamper”ù. He attended the North Marquette School and Graveraet High School. Growing up he had an intense love of nature, enjoyed walking in the woods, loved fishing on the Dead River from his homemade raft, and going out on the ice on Lake Superior in the winter months, which once involved a rescue from an ice flow for a young Rocky and his brother. Rocky was also a collector and had amassed a vast collection of old bottles and coffee cups, often from old dumpsites he uncovered in the woods while walking. As he got older, he developed an interest in antiques, mostly old furniture pieces. In the early 1980’s, Rocky met Margaret “Kitty”ù Maki and she became his soulmate and companion. They lived in Marquette for a time before moving to Ishpeming. Rocky enjoyed refinishing furniture and joined his brother, Mike, in his furniture refinishing business which began in Marquette and later moved to Ishpeming. For many years, Rocky was employed as a general laborer and for the last several years was employed as a groundskeeper at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming. In his leisure moments, he enjoyed fishing, doing jigsaw puzzles with Kitty, biking, and he and Kitty walking their dogs. Rocky was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
Rocky is survived by his siblings, Patricia Bawden, Linda (Ronald) Pilto, Glenda Schofield, Ronald (JoAnn) Schofield, Gerald (Robin) Schofield; a sister-in-law, Dawn Schofield; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
