John D. McCombie

MARQUETTE, MI- John D. “Jack” McCombie, 92, of Marquette, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024 at his home.

John was born on August 8, 1931 in Marquette to Byron D. and Mildred L. (Breer) McCombie. He was a Northern Michigan University Alumni with a Bachelor in Mathematics.

John worked as an electrical and chemical engineer at Cleveland Cliffs for multiple decades. He served in the U.S. Army in the 1950s and was active at the end of the Korean War. His love for aviation materialized into creating model WW2 aircrafts. John had a fascination with steam engines and he always had a train around the Christmas tree. In his final years he enjoyed working Sudokus, crosswords and word-searches found in the Mining Journal. John was also an avid Detroit Lions fan and watched them beat the Buccaneers. He was a father figure to his niece and nephew and never missed out on a dad joke.

John is survived by his sister, Patricia Robb of Munising, MI; nephew, Ian McCombie of Marquette; and niece, Onyx McCombie of Ishpeming. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church, 120 N. Front St., Marquette from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. with Rev. James Robb officiating. There will be no repast.
