Roland Liquia

SUOMI, MI – Roland Liquia, 91, of Co. Rd. MK, passed away peacefully Friday evening, December 22, 2023 at UP Health System Bell.

Roland was born April 12, 1932 in Palmer to Philip and Louise (LaMere) Liquia, attended school in Palmer, and was a lifelong Palmer and Suomi Location resident. He served honorably in the United States Army, being discharged in 1960. Following his service to his country he worked in various mines in Marquette County, retiring from the Empire Mine as a maintenance repairman. Roland married Donna Belanger on September 18, 1952 and together they raised their three children.

Roland was a proud member of the Richmond Township Community Club. In his spare time, he was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed gardening and taking care of the family home.

Surviving are his two sons, Jerry Liquia of Traverse City and Steve (Robin) Liquia of Gwinn; his daughter, Ruth (Valdomero) Suarez of Suomi Location; 7 grandchildren: Tim (Amie) Liquia, Phillip (Amye) Liquia, Zackary (Laura) Suarez, Emily (Pedro) Velazquez, Joel (Christine) Schaub, Kacey LaLonde and Leo Field II; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; his brother, Dennis ‘Gubba’ Liquia; sister, Betty Vadnais; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Donna in 2019; three infant children; his grandson, Shawn Liquia; daughter-in-law, Angela Liquia; two brothers, Lowell and Edward ‘Tuttle’ Liquia; and four sisters: Muriel Glavin, Shirley Arnold, Mary Lou Fraley, Carol Lahnanen.

Honoring Roland’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held next summer. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
