Rebecca “Becky” Jean Johnson

MARQUETTE, MI – Rebecca “Becky” Jean Johnson, age 79, lifelong Marquette resident, was called to her eternal home on December 13, 2023, by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Becky passed peacefully at UP Health System Marquette, where she had been a patient less than a day.

Becky was born on July 15, 1944, in Marquette, to Leonard and Lolita (Nelson) Johnson, and was raised in Marquette. During her high school years, Becky was an active member of the GAA, where she played tennis, basketball, badminton, and volleyball. She graduated from Graveraet High School with the Class of 1963. Throughout the years, Becky held several different jobs, two of which were with the Erickson Radio Shop and Colorvision. The most recent and probably the longest was in Food Service at Northern Michigan University. Becky was a proud and active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church where she generously volunteered her time and talent. She loved to sing and had a beautiful voice, though she couldn’t read a note. As a youngster, she sang in the church junior choir and later with the senior choir.

Becky had been an active member of the Women of the Moose, holding various offices and had traveled to Lansing and to other states due to her positions with the Moose.

In her leisure, Becky enjoyed playing cribbage, belonged to bowling teams, and loved watching her Michigan State Spartans! She was especially thrilled when Gordy LeDuc gave her a personalized, autographed picture of Tom Izzo! She loved football! Her favorite teams were the Minnesota Vikings, the Kansas City Chiefs, and of course, the Packers. Becky loved driving around “the drink”ù (the lake and Island, as she called it), and Park Cemetery every day, which was her usual routine.

She had a nickname for everyone and could really tell jokes. When the church group from Africa visited Messiah, she entertained everyone, keeping her audience in stitches, as she made up things as she went along.

Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Lolita Johnson; two brothers, Douglas and Frederick; sister-in-law, Mary (Frazier) Johnson; and her beloved cat, Ole.

She is survived by her three sisters, Judy (Joe) Gregorich of Marquette, Pauline “Tina”ù Johnson of Mission Point in Ishpeming, and Lorraine “Billie”ù Johnson of Marquette; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Becky will now be reunited with our Messiah’s heavenly choir; singing with Hildegarde, dearest friend, Jan Summersett, Kathy Soltwisch, and Jim Shirtz, to name but a few. She is now free, at peace, no more suffering and pain, with family and friends, “safely home”ù for Christmas with Jesus!

We love you Becky! You’ll live on in our hearts and memories.

To those reading this: God bless us everyone! And, tell the people you love, you love them! Tell them today!

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Becky’s memory to the Community Assistance Fund at Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic Street, Marquette, MI 49855.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Messiah Lutheran Church on Wednesday, December 20, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Lunch and fellowship will follow in Magnuson Hall. Interment will be made in the Park Cemetery.
