Raymond Lloyd Surfass
FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI- Raymond Lloyd Surfass, age 95, of Forsyth Township, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Michigan Veterans Home D.J. Jacobetti.
Born March 9, 1928, in Gwinn, a son of Lester and Martha (Zintman) Serfass. Raymond graduated from the Gwinn High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and following his honorable discharge, returned to the area. On August 26, 1950, Raymond was united in marriage to Beverly Jane Starnes and together the couple made their home in the Marquette area where they raised their family. Raymond was employed as a miner with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for many years, retiring at age 55. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed all that nature had to offer. He lived a simple, but fulfilling life, enjoying deer and bird hunting, and tying his own flys for his passion of fly fishing. He was physically a tough guy who built his own house, liked to be out in nature picking berries, any type of berry, and enjoyed telling and hearing a good joke. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Marquette.
Survivors include his children, Kendall (Dorothy) Surfass of Salt Lake City, UT, Randy (Laura) Surfass of Metamora, MI, Kathy Lynn (Lee) Elrod of Whitney, TX, Michael (Tabatha) Surfass of Lansing, MI; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; and foster parents, Agner (Ragna) Blomquist.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the Michigan Veterans Home D. J. Jacobetti and the staff of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice for their compassionate and professional care, and for the many kindnesses they extended to the family.
