Mervyn ‘Butch’ Stanaway

NEGAUNEE, MI – Mervyn LeRoy ‘Butch’ Stanaway, 76, lifelong area resident, passed away Monday morning, December 11, 2023 at his home.

Butch was born May 4, 1947 in Negaunee to Mervyn and Ruth (Hautamaki) Stanaway and attended West Ishpeming Schools until the family moved to Negaunee. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp, having honorably served for three years during the Vietnam War.

Following his service to his country, Butch worked at the family business, Stan’s Auto and Towing. He was a lifetime member of V.A. Romo Post #3165, Negaunee VFW. Butch was an avid fan of NASCAR and enjoyed cheering for the Detroit Lions and Tigers. Most of all, he enjoyed visiting with his many friends downtown Negaunee over a cold Butch Light.

Surviving are his brother, Brian Stanaway of Ishpeming; sister, Patricia Seppala of Ishpeming; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Susan Stanaway in 2017; and four brothers: Ken, Ray, David and Donald.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-7pm on Saturday, December 23rd at the Negaunee VFW. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery.
