Joseph McCormick

NEGAUNEE, MI – Joseph G. McCormick, 82, of Negaunee, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, December 18, 2023 at the Trillium Hospice House in Marquette while in the care of his loving family and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Joe was born January 6, 1941 in Ishpeming to George and Lucille (LaFreniere) McCormick and graduated from Negaunee St. Paul High School, Class of 1959. Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Antietam for four years, being honorably discharged in 1963. Joe was united in marriage to Kathleen Rappazini on June 6, 1964 and together they raised their three children in Negaunee.

Joe was employed by Cleveland Cliffs as an electrician at the Tilden Mine, retiring in 1997 with 30 years of service. He was a dedicated worker and generous with volunteering with St. Vincent De Paul for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing and spending time at his log cabin he built on the Escanaba River. Most importantly, Joe was a devoted family man and cherished time with his loved ones.

Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Kathleen McCormick; two daughters, Paula (Rob Peterson) McCormick of Bowling Green, KY and Patti McCormick of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI; son, Steve (Amy) McCormick of Ishpeming; three grandchildren: Adam and Cole Francis, and Amelia McCormick; his sister, Addie Ahlstrom of Florida; brother, Jim (Chris) McCormick of Ishpeming; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Tony McCormick; and two sisters: Marianne Richards and Luella Hensley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Friday, December 22nd at St. Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Friday from 10:00 am until 11:45 am, at which time military honors will be accorded. Following Mass, a luncheon will be held in the St. Paul Gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Joe’s memory to St. Vincent De Paul, Negaunee and/or The Trillium Hospice House in Marquette.
