Terry ‘Pooch’ Monroe

SHINGLETON, MI- Terry “Pooch” Monroe, age 71, of Shingleton, died early Thursday morning, November 2, 2023 at Medilodge of Munising. He was born in Munising on April 11, 1952 and raised in Shingleton by his mother, Dormalee Monroe.

As a kid, he was a great catcher for the Shingleton Little League team. Pooch graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1970. He married Trudy Becker, and they raised their two children. They lived in Detroit where Pooch worked for TRW Automotive. The family moved back to the Upper Peninsula and Pooch worked at the White Pine Mine before going to work at Kimberly Clark in Munising. He used to love spending time with his friends at the Shingleton Gas Station. Pooch loved to travel, whether it was a cruise around town with his kids, road trip across the U.S. or tropical vacation to Hawaii or Jamaica he loved his trips. One of his yearly trips he enjoyed was to the U.P. State Fair, as well as the occasional trip to the Casino.

Pooch was a University Michigan Wolverine fan and was a huge Detroit Lions fan. He loved listening to the radio broadcast while watching the game on television. While watching recent current events, he said,“Sure, all this chaos in the world while the Lions are winning. I am sure the government is being run by Packer fans.” Pooch was funny, kind, strong, and simple man who overcame many adversities. He also loved a good meal. He especially enjoyed being around his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pooch was a great father who would listen as a sounding board without judgement. Over the past years he had lived at Medilodge, where the caring staff not only gave him outstanding care, they became a part of his extended family.

Pooch is survived by his son – Gene Monroe of Shingleton; daughter – Shelley and Mike Sadak of Shingleton; grandchildren – Liane Sadak (Paul Sadler) and Brandon (Taylor) Monroe; great-grandchildren – Austin, Hawk, and Arya; sister – Sandy Monroe of Shingleton; niece Michelle Monroe; and although no longer married, the true love of his life – Trudy Becker.
