Robert Matchett

MARQUETTE, MI- Robert L. “Bob” Matchett, 85, of Marquette, died Wednesday morning, November 15, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.

Bob was born on January 24, 1938 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, to the late Robert A. and Lorraine (Porta) Matchett. He was a 1956 graduate of Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin.

Bob was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Marquette in 1964 and served the diocese for seven years. After leaving the priesthood, Bob received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lake Superior State University in 1971 and a Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois University in Community Mental Health. He then worked as a substance abuse coordinator at the LMAS District Health Department for 15 years. He retired on February 1, 2000 from Marquette Branch Prison as chaplain.

During his retirement years, Bob enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, the former Paula Normand who he married on November 23, 1972 at Rockton, Illinois; a son, Jeffrey (Yvonne) Matchett of Taylor, Texas and a daughter, Sarah Matchett of Marquette. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jake, Joseph, Veronica, Jordan, Allen, Elliott, Elizabeth, and Madi; also one great granddaughter, Briar. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a sister, Joanne Trevino in 1994.

The Matchett family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, November 24th at St. Michael Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon with the Rev. Gregory Heikkala officiating and Deacon Dennis Maki assisting. A luncheon will be served in the Zyrd Parish Center immediately following the Mass. Inurnment will conclude in the Holy Cross Cemetery Columbarium.
