Cheryl Lynn (Anttila) Maki

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – Cheryl Lynn (Anttila) Maki, age 74, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, passed away peacefully at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI Hospice unit on October 28th, 2023, after a brief illness. During her time there, she was surrounded by those she loved most- her children.

Cheryl was born on November 26, 1948, to Harold and Lillian (Laakso) Anttila at St. Luke’s Hospital in Marquette, MI. She grew up in Limestone, MI attending school in Traunik and Eben. She graduated in 1966 from Eben High School. After graduation, she attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Marquette. She worked at Wolff’s Sewing Center until she married Donald J. Maki of Eben. While Don was in the Navy, they were stationed in various places including Japan, Alaska, California, Florida, and Sault Ste. Marie, MI. During their years together they raised their children, Amy, John, Sara, and Adam. During her lifetime she worked at various places and was able to help her parents in their later years. She then moved back to Sault Ste. Marie, MI to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. During her time on this earth, she enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, and crocheting; she loved live music and dancing, watching the Detroit Tigers, and most of all attending the sporting events of her children and grandchildren. As a 100% proud and stubborn Finn, her “happy place” was the Sauna.

Cheryl is survived by her children, Amy (Gary) Artley of Sault Ste. Marie, John (Angela) Maki of Eben Jct., Sara Nicholls (Mark Armstrong) of Sault Ste. Marie; two sisters, Rhonda (Allen) Bossom and Janice (William) Chasteen; her ex-husband, Donald Maki (Betty Powell); grandchildren, Hunter (Stephanie) McLeod, Lacey (Chris) Williams, and Dakota Maki; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn McLeod and Michael Williams. She also cared deeply for her “bonus” granddaughter, Jackie, and “bonus” great-grandchildren, Vada and Arlo; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear “old” friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Adam; and her brother, Gary.

The Memorial Services will be held at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham, MI on Saturday, November 11, 2023. The gathering will be held from 11:00am to 1:00pm, and the service will begin at 1:00pm. A luncheon will take place immediately following the service in the basement of the church.
