NEGAUNEE,MI- Joseph Leonard Duckworth, Sr., 81, longtime Negaunee resident passed away peacefully Monday morning, October 16, 2023 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, with his loving family at his side.
Joe was born April 21, 1942 in East New Brunswick, New Jersey, to Albert and Rose (Bernstein) Duckworth, grew up in New York City, from where he graduated high school. He then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960, serving in Scotland, where he worked on the submarines and submarine tenders, and was honorably discharged in 1964. Following his service to his country, he relocated to Marquette in 1976 and began his career in business. He earned his Associate’s Degree in Business from Northern Michigan University in 1977.
Mr. Duckworth opened Midas Muffler in Marquette, which he owned until 1986, and was then the owner and operator of Nancy’s Carpets along with his wife and son.
Mr. Duckworth was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marquette, as well as the Little Lake American Legion where he served as chaplain. In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman, spending many days on a lake or in a river with his best friend, John Katona. Bowling was his true passion, and even after 60 years old, bowled four perfect ‘300’ games. He was in various bowling leagues over the years, and truly loved being around the alley and the people there.
Surviving are his daughter, Joyce (Robert) Abramson of Negaunee; eight grandchildren: Joseph III and Kellan Duckworth, Elizabeth and Mark (Kelly) Livermore, Erin (Heidi) Ward, Alexanderia (Dalton) Bertrand, and Ben and Jayne Daley; seven great-grandchildren; his brothers, Rich and Bert; five sisters: Nancy, Penni, Faith, Kelly and Robin; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Nancy in 2018; his son, Joseph, Jr. in 2021; brother, Albert; and three sisters: Clara, Maryellen and Marcella.
Public services will be held at a later date, and will be announced by Koskey Funeral Home.
