Dr. Jerome A. Roth
MARQUETTE, MI – Dr. Jerome A. Roth, known affectionately as Jerry, of Marquette, passed away on Sunday evening, October 15, 2023 surrounded by his family at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee, after a brave battle with cancer.
Born on August 13, 1940, in Springfield, IL, Jerry’s life was characterized by an unwavering commitment to education, a deep love for his family, and a lifelong passion for the great outdoors.
Jerry’s journey to academic excellence began in 1958 when he graduated from Cathedral Boys High School. His love for chemistry saw him graduate from Loyola University with a BS in Chemistry in 1962. Jerry furthered his studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned his PhD in 1966. His career took off when he secured a post-doctoral position at Northwestern University, his first teaching role, where he coordinated the organic TAs and taught the Organic Chemistry course for two consecutive quarters in 1967-68. The standing ovation he received from his students sparked his enduring passion for teaching.
In 1968, Jerry relocated his young family to Marquette and accepted an Assistant Professor position at Northern Michigan University (NMU), where he became deeply committed to teaching the main Organic Chemistry courses. Despite never considering himself a union man, Jerry played a crucial role in forming a Chapter of the AAUP at NMU in the early 70s. Jerry took a sabbatical leave in 1979 at the University of Cincinnati, where he collaborated with Chemist Milt Orchin to publish several papers on cobalt catalysis of organic reactions, in the 1980s. In 1994, over his own objections, Jerry became the Head of the Department of Chemistry at NMU, a role he embraced until his retirement in 2001. He was particularly proud of recruiting the Chemistry Faculty, overseeing the renovation of the West Science Building and the construction of the New Science Facility, and the development of several academic programs. Whether it was making his own hand-blown lab glassware, or his position on the pre-Medical Board, he thoroughly enjoyed his work and had few regrets.
Outside of his professional commitments, Jerry was a devoted family man.
He is survived by his loving wife Dee Roth (nee Laursen), their two sons, Arthur (Isela) and Matthew Roth, and a Granddaughter, Hayleigh. Jerry’s kindness was a beacon for his family, and his analytical mind was a guiding force in their lives. Jerry was predeceased by his Parents; Lawrence and Marie (McSherry)Roth, his siblings; Anne, Richard and Raymond (twins), and Paul. Also, several furry friends; Nicki, Sasha, Woodchuck, Nuthatch, Rhubarb, Bayleen, Rusty and Big Foot.
Jerry was also an avid outdoorsman. In his early years, he enjoyed canoeing in his refurbished Peterborough canoe, stalking trout with his flyrod and handmade flies, camping with his wife whenever possible, and the Annual drive to the Keweenaw Peninsula to see the Fall colors. Winter activities included snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. He played racquetball and basketball frequently until his health conditions kept him off the court. Later in life, he found joy in quieter pursuits such as reading, crossword puzzles, watching detective series, and enjoying a good ballgame on TV, even developing a fondness for watching golf. The Packers were his NFL team of choice, but he wasn’t too proud to admit that a given team was doing really well, even the Lions.
Jerry, and his Family, would like to thank the countless health care providers that he got to know throughout his twenty (plus) year Cancer Odyssey; The ER Doctor (a prior student of his) who identified his “sore throat” as cancer. To the Mayo Clinic (Rochester), Dr. Dispenzieri et al, for the absolute best cancer treatment, in the region. To the Doctors, and Staff at UPHS Oncology and Urology Departments that treated his ongoing conditions. And last, but not least, to the Doctors and Staff of the Emergency Department for taking care of him in his times of need. He took some pride in being called a “tough, old bird”.
Dr. Jerome A. Roth, or Jerry, as he was known, leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to education. His contributions to the field of chemistry and his impact as a teacher will be remembered by many. His love for his family and his passion for the outdoors are testaments to a life well-lived. Jerry will be dearly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
