MARQUETTE, MI – It is with great sadness that our mother Shirley Savitski/St. George passed away June 16, 2023. She was born in Greenfield, MA, in 1927.
She studied Dance under Ella Karabel in Boston, MA. The highlight of her dance career was being chosen to perform in the musical ‘Carman’, under Sue Maggi Opera Co. of Chicago at the Boston Opera House.
In 1949, she opened, Savitski’s School of Dance, in Marquette, Negaunee and Gwinn. For 24 years, she would delight her audiences with her creative ingenuity using special lighting, scenery and choreography. Throughout the years she choreographed and performed in various Musicals in Marquette and Portland, MI.
Her two daughters; Laura (Chapman) and Eadie (Aschliman) shared in her enthusiasm in the Performing Arts.
She moved to Portland, MI, where she was Office Manager for the Ford Dealership for approximately 23 years.
Hobbies/Interest include cake decorating, crocheting, art projects, etc. Shirley was an avid card player, especially Pinochle.
She was predeceased by her parents; Laura and Wilfred St. George, brothers; Richard and Wilfred (Buster) and sisters; Louise Eisenhauer, Martha Uronis and Clare Delamere, also predeceased by son-in-law; Mike Chapman and long time friend; Estelle Mathews.
Besides her daughters; Laura and Eadie (Dave), Shirley is also survived by her grandchildren; Amy (Dave) Grake, Michelle (Chad) Baulch, Julie (Chris) Rutkai, and Mark (Asia) Chapman, as well as, eight great-grandchildren.
Shirley’s life will be celebrated at Lakenenland in Marquette, on Sept. 22nd 2023, from 11 AM until 1 PM and she will be laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery.
