Laura E. Gotham

Laura Gotham
MARQUETTE, MI – Laura E. Gotham, 96, of Marquette, fell asleep in death on September 21, 2023. She had enjoyed well over 90 years of healthy, active life on this earth.
Laura was born to George and Hazel Spero, their only child, and grew up on their farm in Unionville, Michigan. At age 18 she married her classmate, Lester Gotham, and within a few years they made their home in Mayville, Michigan. There they raised their three children, Roy (Jane Thompson), Patty (Phil) MacGregor, and Cathy (David) Valentine. Lester predeceased her in 2009. All three of their children survive. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
While a housewife and mother, Laura was also an active Avon Lady for over 60 years. After Lester’s retirement they moved up to Barbeau, on the St. Mary’s River, where they enjoyed a very full life of fishing, entertaining and teaching family and friends how to waterski. When Lester had a stroke in 2001 they moved to Marquette, making many new friends, for over 20 years.
Laura was a witty, well-read and very social person. She wouldn’t miss Jeopardy or the evening news, and she loved to play cards. She has left the card table believing she is well ahead of son-in-law Phil (or ought to be) in cribbage wins. And she took very seriously her designated role as “Granny Grapevine”, keeping abreast of activities of every family member so she could in turn inform the rest of the family.
Laura’s memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Marquette on Saturday, October 7th at 3:00 pm.
An hour of visitation will precede services. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Lake Superior Hospice personnel and Dr. Jennifer Dehlin.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, 914 W. Baraga Ave, Marquette, MI 49855.
