Fredrica J. “Judy” Farrell

Judy was born on December 9, 1932, in Escanaba, the child of Thaxter and Lucille (Jerome) Shaw. She graduated from Escanaba High School and then Eastern Michigan University.

Judy married John “Pat” Farrell in 1953. While they raised their children in Marquette, Judy was employed as a substitute teacher with the Marquette School District. In the mid- 1970’s, Judy entered Northern Michigan University and received a Master’s Degree in Library Science and after was employed by NMU as a Reference Librarian. Judy was very active in the launching and organizing of the Young Author’s Program in Marquette and instilled a love of great children’s literature in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After their children moved out of the house, Judy and her husband Pat, moved to a home on Lake Superior. She loved her home on the lake, and enjoyed hosting friends and family there for various celebratory occasions, including the weddings of her son Larry and two of her grandchildren. Judy was a member of PEO for 70 years. A philanthropic company of her PEO sisters. She was very giving of her time and friendship, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Judy is survived by her son, Mike (Sharon) Farrell of Marquette; daughter, Shawn Chambers of St. Paul, MN; grandsons, Cavan (Darcie) Farrell and Bryn (Beth) Chambers; granddaughters, Cashel (Derek) Rabitaille and Erin Chambers; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pat; sister, Sally (Theodore) Cunio and her son, Larry.

Judy’s family would like to extend their special thanks to the caring staff of Mill Creek and U.P. Home Health and Hospice. They would also like to thank and extend their appreciation to Judy’s many friends who visited and cared for her.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Mike & Sharon Farrell’s Home at 2133 Montgomery St., Marquette, MI 49855.
