Daniel Mazzuchi
MARQUETTE, MI – Dr. Daniel S. Mazzuchi, died August 10, 2023 at Trillium House in Marquette, surrounded by his wife and family, following a battle with cancer.
Daniel Sylvester Mazzuchi was born in Washington, D.C. on May 10, 1939, to Mario and Elinor (Fox) Mazzuchi. Following high school he attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he met his future wife, Connie. He attended medical school and completed residency and a nephrology fellowship at George Washington University School of Medicine. Following residency he joined the U.S. Navy as a Staff Internist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida from 1969-71.
On June 16, 1962, Dan married Cornelia “Connie” Mackesy, in Boylston, Massachusetts. Their complete commitment to each other produced seven children in nine years and after a few early job changes and relocations they ultimately settled in Marquette in 1973.
This final move proved to be a decision that would bring them 50 years of happiness in their home and community. Cornelia was always his first priority and they were a wonderful team. They were lucky to have many friends and a large, close family with whom they spent a fulfilling life. They especially enjoyed opening their home to share with friends and family their love of entertaining, Connie’s cooking, and Dan’s wine cellar. Theirs was a long and happy marriage and they were proud to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary in June 2023.
Dr. Mazzuchi was very active in the medical community. He opened an internal medicine and nephrology practice in 1973 and was proud of his early association with pioneers of specialty medical services in the Upper Peninsula. He worked to establish the hospital’s first full-time Emergency Department and helped launch the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program. He was also instrumental in developing the U.P. community campus for the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and he found great satisfaction in helping to train and recruit future physicians to strengthen the medical community in the Upper Peninsula. He retired from MSU in 2000.
After his retirement, Dr. Mazzuchi began volunteering with Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice. For 20 years his volunteer experience became a deeply felt commitment that led to the planning for Trillium House, where he spent his final days surrounded by his family and the loving and caring staff.
Throughout his life in Marquette, Dan was active in a variety of community organizations, including service as a Commissioner and Mayor for the City of Marquette, as well as, on boards for the Marquette Area Chamber of Commerce, Economic Club, Community Foundation, NMU Wildcat Club, leadership of the United Way, and various other organizations. He was proud of his work in the community and grateful to receive various forms of recognition for his work.
Dan was preceded in death by his daughter, Marianne Evans in 2008, his granddaughter, Rachael Tillison on July 10, 2023, and his brother-in-law, John Wojcik in 2020.
