William Haupt

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI – William Richard Haupt, III, 75, of Negaunee Township, passed away at his home early Sunday morning, July 16, 2023.

William was born August 15, 1947 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Marquette to William and Lillian (Niemi) Haupt, Jr., and was a graduate of Negaunee High School. He also completed Naval Aviation Technical Training School in Memphis, TN, and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Michigan University in 1972. Over the years he completed numerous electrical and technical seminars. He was also an educator, teaching for three years at Madison West High School, and also as a special instructor in electrical engineering at NMU for nine years.

Mr. Haupt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1966, and received his orders for Vietnam in July of that year. While serving in numerous regions during his time there, he was part of a group of Marines that was able to make it to sea on January 30, 1968, the beginning of the Tet Offensive, and the invasion of Saigon by the North Vietnamese. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal, and truly believed that his time in the Marine Corps led to his future successes in life.

In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, sport shooting, fly tying, and cross-country skiing. He enjoyed being at camp on the Dead River Basin and driving the backroads. He also had a passion for gardening and canning the bounty.

Surviving are his daughter, Maria Snell of Palmer; granddaughter, Tabitha ‘Tabi’ Haupt; his companion who love and life found for him after his wife’s passing, Nancy Kelly; his sister-in-law, Mary Haupt; and two nephews, David (Sherrie) and Jeremy (Heather) Haupt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Sandra (Grayes) Haupt in 2016; and his brother, Clayton Haupt.

Private graveside services will be held in the Negaunee Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps.
