Mary Catherine Mathews
MARQUETTE, MI – Mary Catherine Mathews, 85, of Marquette, passed away early Monday morning, July 10, 2023 at Trillium House in the comfort of her loving family and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
Mary Catherine was born on September 20, 1937 in Marquette, one of six children born to the late Francis X. and Rhea C. (Malbouef) Mathews. She was a lifelong Marquette resident and a 1955 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School.
Mary Catherine was a 29 year employee of the City of Marquette, retiring as executive assistant to the City Manager. Her years with the city were filled with happiness and she made many long lasting friendships there.
Faith, family, friendships and Lake Superior were what mattered most to her. In her free time, Mary Catherine enjoyed reading, gardening, walks along Lake Superior and spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral.
Survivors include four children, Vince J. (Deborah L.) Luoma of Downers Grove, IL, Mary B. Burdick of Marquette, Tedd P. Luoma of Anoka, MN, and Vicki A. (Glenn) Johnson of Marquette; seven grandchildren, Andrew Burdick, Matthew Weight, Joseph Luoma, William Luoma, Eli Luoma, Nicole Johnson, and her husband, Carson Stoolmiller, and Hannah Johnson; also many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were siblings, Elizabeth Hill, William Mathews, Robert Mathews, Ann Heitman, and Jeanette Klit.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, July 14 in the Bishop’s Room of St. Peter Cathedral beginning at 10a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Cathedral at 12 noon with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A luncheon will be served in the cathedral hall immediately following the Mass.
