CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI – Ellen Louise Krieg, age 85, of Chocolay Township, entered eternal life Saturday, July 15, 2023, at home, in the loving, comforting care of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice.
Born October 30, 1937, in Manistique, Michigan, a daughter of Harold and Bertha (Peterson) Holmquist, Ellen was raised in Kingsford/Iron Mountain and graduated from Kingsford High School. She relocated to Marquette and enrolled in St. Luke’s School of Nursing, graduating with her Registered Nursing degree in 1958. Later that year, Ellen was united in marriage to Ronald Krieg on December 27, 1958. Her nursing career began at St. Luke’s Hospital and, in 1979, she became employed with Dr. G. Michael Nidiffer at the Medical Center thru her time of retirement. At the time of her retirement, Ellen had devoted more than 50 years of service and caring to the nursing profession. In her leisure, she enjoyed knitting and sewing, creating beautiful baby sweaters, Christmas stockings, and afghans. She also enjoyed reading, traveling with her sister, Melanie, and in her young years liked to go listen to country music with Ron and friends.
Ellen is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ronald; her two children, Michael Krieg of Michigan and Rebecca (Charles) Peterson of Mesa Arizona; three grandchildren, Jan Michael (Kristina) Krieg, Abby (Brian) Krieg-Luukkonen, and Rachel (Mark) Strelka; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Melanie Froling; brother, Gerald Holmquist; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of UP Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate and professional care and also for the many kindnesses extended to the family during her final days.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Thursday, July 20, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Alex LaChapelle will officiate.
A reception will follow in the funeral home reception room.
