MARQUETTE, MI – Jerome “Jerry" Bielicki. Dear God, we cared enough to send you over our very best, Jerome Bielicki age 77 of Marquette passed away April 28. He was born July 20, 1946 to the late Harry and Joan (Cieslinsiki) Bielicki. Younger brother of the deceased Wallace Bielicki. Survived by his sister Barbara (Bielicki) Sokol, two nephews, Jerry Sokol, Paul Sokol and one niece Lynn (Sokol) Rinke. Jerome attended St. Ladislaus High School Class of 1964. Jerry was a talented photographer and videographer. Photography was always part of his life and career since high school. An award winning photographer, Jerry eventually specialized in his favorite subject maritime ships and freighters.
After getting a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing/TV & Film from Wayne State University in 1970, Jerry took Journalism Classes at Northern Michigan University in 1979. He was the Media Coordinator for the Alger Marquette Community Action Agency from 1976-81.
He then moved to Duluth were he worked for Bresnan Communications from 1982-85. For the next ten years, as self-employed photographer in Duluth, Jerry's stock photography of Maritime subjects were used by numerous companies. His work was used by the Army Corps of Engineers, City of Duluth, NOAA, Lake Superior Paper Industries, Port of Duluth, Interlake Steamship Company, Bethlehem Steel Co. Algoma Marine, American Steamship Company, and St Lawrence Seaway Development. His photographs were published in numerous magazines including Lake Superior Magazine, Seaway Review, Work Boat, Mariners Weather Log, Farm Journal, and Earth to name a few.
While at Bresnan Communications in Duluth, Jerry produced programs for the Canal Park Museum, University of Minnesota Theatre, and the Duluth School District. In 1989, Jerry won Best Documentary Video for " Laker Odyssey" for Minnesota Public Television. He also won two awards in 1989 and one in 1992 for Eastman Kodak/ US Navel Institute.
After moving back to Marquette in 1992 Jerry had a variety of jobs including at NMU Public TV and contract photographer for NMU 1995-2001, Videographer at Bresnan Communications, Senior Videographer at WLUC -TV 2000-2002 and assistant at Superior View Photography. He might be best known for his time as a photographer for the Mining Journal 1994-2000. In 1997 Jerry won an Associated Press Award for his news photography.
