Marvin (Marv) James Gauthier
Marvin Gauthier
BIG BAY, MI – Marvin (Marv) James Gauthier, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away Friday, April 7th, 2023, after a short illness. He was 88.
Marv was born September 21st, 1934, in Baraga, Michigan, to Melvin and Frances (Foucault) Gauthier. As a young boy, he worked for his grandfather at Gauthier’s General Store and later worked at Soli’s Mill, until graduating from Baraga High School in 1952. After high school, Marv worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, a flooring mill, and the railroad, before beginning a decorated career with the Marquette Police Department, in 1955.
After rising through the ranks, he retired in 1988 as Captain of the Detective Unit.
Marv married his high school sweetheart, the former Marilyn Homier, of L’Anse, Michigan on July 31st, 1954. They resided in Marquette, Michigan, until relocating to their home in Big Bay, Michigan, on Lake Independence. For nearly 69 years, Marv and Marilyn shared many adventures: boating several of the Great Lakes and into Canada, snowmobiling in the Upper Peninsula, and traveling around the U.S. and Mexico in “The Caddy.” After retiring, they became snowbirds, spending winters at their home in Sarasota, Florida, even making the round-trip drive themselves far into their 80s.
The word “rest” was simply not in Marv’s vocabulary. A very talented builder, he always had a project and even after retirement, continued to work “part time.” He thrived on keeping busy, always taking on construction jobs for friends and neighbors. He also became an avid golfer and joined the Marquette Golf Club, where he enjoyed many a day on the golf course with his nephews and friends.
Marve was a devoted family man and consummate host. He loved opening his homes and spending time with family and friends.
Two of his favorite pastimes were talking Packers with his nephew, Jaren, and fishing on Lake Superior. He also adored his dogs and there were many throughout his lifetime, including a hound, Boston Terriers, a poodle, and finally, a Scottie.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Ward Gauthier; brothers in law, Joseph Zagar, Ed, Ellis, and Joseph Sirard.
He is survived by Marilyn, his loving wife of nearly 69 years; sister, Nancy Ellis; sister-in-law, Doreen Zager; nephews; Joe Sirard, Jeff (Cynthia) Sirard, Jaren Sirard; nieces; Lisa Sirard, Michelle Ellis; Nicole (Cory) Wisehart and several great-nephews and nieces.
Services will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, in Big Bay, Michigan, at a later date.
