George Martin Freeman

CANEYVILLE, KY – George Martin Freeman, age 83, passed away Friday, January 13th, 2023, at his home in Caneyville, KY, after a lengthy illness, cared for by his loving wife and daughter.

George was born to George Edwin Freeman and Elma Esther Elizabeth Valimaki, on September 30th, 1939, in Ishpeming, Michigan. George was also baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Later, he attended Negaunee Public Schools in Negaunee MI, where the family had moved. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958, taking basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. George did military service in Hawaii, Fort Knox Kentucky, Germany, and, later in the 1980s, in Turkey. Among his duties was working as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. It was while stationed in Fort Knox, that George met Alice Marie Lee of Louisville, KY, whom he later married in 1962. George and Alice celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on July 7th, 2022.

From 1964-1980, George worked at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company in Louisville, KY, becoming Shop Steward in the union there.

George joined the Ishpeming National Guard, and did service there from 1983-1990. It was while in the Ishpeming National Guard, that he was stationed in Turkey.

Also, in 1985, George and Alice bought a camp on Lake Petticoat near the Three Lakes Area of MI, where they, and various family members and friends enjoyed themselves on many occasions throughout the years.

Around 1987, George was employed by Diesel Fleet in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and in the 1990s, he worked at Head Start Schools in Leitchfield, KY, later retiring from there.

George is survived by his wife; a son, Daniel Lee Freeman of Marquette, MI; a daughter, Anita Joanne Freeman of Ishpeming, MI; two grandchildren, Andrew James Freeman of Ishpeming, MI, and Zachary Edwin Freeman of San Antonio, TX; and a great-granddaughter, Peyton Freeman, and a great-grandson, Rowen Freeman and numerous nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Cody Martin Freeman in 1989; his sister, Joanne K. McCoy in 2018 and a nephew, Roger J. McCoy on October 16th, 2022.

Cremation was chosen.
