Steven ‘Peppy’ Laine

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI – Steven Scott ‘Peppy’ Laine, lifelong Negaunee Township resident, died January 20th, 2023, at UP Health System – Marquette, with his loving family by his side.

Pep was born January 24th, 1955, in Marquette, to Donald and Shirley (Wilks) Laine, Sr. and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1973. After graduation, he worked for Cleveland Cliffs as a heavy machinery mechanic at various properties, retiring with over 40 years of service with CCI. Pep was a Union Officer for USW Local 4974 for over 30 years, serving as Union President for four years. He was also the Treasurer of the Union Steel Workers Coalition until it dissolved in 2021.

Pep had a breath-taking talent in wood work, making beautiful clocks for his loved ones and friends to enjoy. He enjoyed a long motorcycle ride in the summers and late fall. He found passion working on antique cars and had great pride in owning his fire blue Ford Mustang. Pep liked to hunt and be outdoors for the simplest things. He loved long conversations on the phone with friends. He was talented with computers and recently bought a musical keyboard he was learning to play.

Pep had great hobbies, however it was not things or hobbies that defined his life. Instead, it was his relationship of over 48 years and marriage of over 30 years to his best friend and wife Elizabeth “Liz” (St. Aubin) Laine. Pep’s favorite girl in the world was his only daughter Nancy. He shared the best gift of relationship with his grandson Gavin. With his family he enjoyed life, and took pride in loving them and providing for them.

Pep is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Liz; daughter, Nancy; mother, Shirley Winter; sister, Misty (John) Buterbaugh; sister-in-law, Marie; three brothers-in-law: Tom (Lynn), Daryl and Kenny (Sue) St. Aubin; several nieces and nephews; along with many others who called him friend.

Pep was preceded in death by his father; an infant brother, Calvin; brother, Donald Laine, Jr.; and stepfather, Joe Winter.

Pep’s family would like to thank all medical professionals and the staff at UP Health Systems for their care over the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 26th at Koskey Funeral Home. A reception will immediately follow at the Negaunee Eagles.
