Peter Airaudi
HELEN LAKE, MI – Peter Marvin Airaudi, 85, of Helen Lake, passed away Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, at his home.
Peter was born March 26th, 1937, in Ishpeming, to Ambrose ‘Pork’ and Aune (Lahti) Airaudi. A long-time resident of Negaunee, he was raised on Ann Street and graduated from Negaunee St. Paul High School, Class of 1956. Following graduation, Pete served in the US Navy from 1956-60 aboard the USS Hawkins DD/DDR 873.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Pete returned to Negaunee and worked a short time at the United Steelworkers Union Hall before beginning his career with the City of Negaunee.
He was employed in various capacities, retiring as the Sexton of the Negaunee Cemetery.
Peter married the late Joan (Chamberlain) Byykkonen, on August 1st, 1992 and they moved to his beloved ‘camp’ on the north shore of Helen Lake.
Surviving are his brothers: A. Michael of Negaunee; David of West Bend, WI, James of Grafton, WI and Jesse of Cedar Park, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Joan ‘Jo’, and his sister: Judith Verley.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3-5 pm on Friday, January 20th at Koskey Funeral Home in Negaunee. Burial will take place at 11 am, on Monday, January 23rd at the Negaunee Cemetery.
