Shirley Johnson

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI – Shirley Ann Johnson, 86, of Negaunee Township, passed away peacefully at home Friday evening, November 18th, 2022, under the care of her loving family and Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.

Shirley was born October 28th, 1936, in Republic, to the late Victor and Tynne (Seppa) Wuokko, and attended Republic Schools. She married, Robert V. Johnson, on May 4, 1957, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Republic. They relocated to the Negaunee area where she was a loving and devoted homemaker to her family. She was a very proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always attending events including graduations, soccer games, baseball games, ice skating, horse shows and school programs.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee. In her spare time, she enjoyed being with her family, working crossword puzzles, playing Yahtzee, and enjoyed when Robert sang and played the guitar. One of her favorite hobbies was building jigsaw puzzles. She was proud to have won several blue ribbons at the county fair for her jigsaw work, including ribbons for a 1,000 piece Jesus on the Cross, a 1,200-piece working grandfather clock, and a 1,000 piece ‘The Night Before Christmas.’

Surviving are her loving husband of 65 years, Robert ‘Rawhide’ Johnson; her two sons, Robert (Patty) and Russell (Vicky) Johnson; two grandchildren, Melinda (Brad) Johnson and Robert (Kristin) Johnson; great-grandsons, Logan Johnson and Levi Laitinen; a sister, Aili Numikoski; a brother, Roger (Janet) Wuokko; sister-in-law, Sandy Wuokko and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Reino, William, and George Wuokko; sisters, Elsa Ahtonen, Lilly Wuokko, Elvie Miller, Elaine St. Andre, Elma Laitinen, Bertha Kerkela, Esther Remington and Nancy Wuokko; and sister-in-law, Virginia Wuokko.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 29th, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, with Rev. Michael Holman officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00 AM until the start of services at 11:00 AM at the church on Tuesday, and also at a luncheon immediately following services in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Shirley’s memory to Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.
