Jalmer W. Lakonen, Jr.

SPURR TWP., MI – Jalmer W. Lakonen, Jr., age 76, longtime Spurr Twp. resident, passed away peacefully at home holding the hand of his granddaughter, Breann, on Saturday, August 20th, 2022, and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.

Jalmer was born in Michigamme, on September 18th, 1945, a son of the late Elizabeth (Hopkins) and Jalmer W. Lakonen, Sr. He grew up in Michigamme and was a graduate of the Michigamme High School. Jalmer served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 30 years at many of the local mines, retiring from the Empire Mine in 1998.

Jalmer was united in marriage to Arlene Nurmela, in July of 1968. He enjoyed golfing at the Wawonowin and L’Anse golf courses. Most of all he loved being a full-time grandparent in his retirement years.

Jalmer is survived by daughter, Anna (Chad) Zoglman of Green Bay, WI; son, Jalmer (Randi) Lakonen III of Hortonville, WI; a sister, Dawn (Ronald) Dubord of Nekoosa, WI, 8 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jalmer was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, on June 1st, 2021, and 3 sisters, Shirley Niemi, Nancy Gooding and Joyce Windahl.

The family will greet relatives and friends to remember Jalmer and Arlene at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Champion on Saturday, September 10th, 2022, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM, with food and refreshments available throughout this time.

Graveside services will follow at 4:30 PM for Jalmer and Arlene at the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme, where the U.S. Marine Corps will accord Military Honors for Jalmer.
