Susan Douglas MacGregor

NEGAUNEE, MI – Susan Douglas MacGregor, age 61, a long-time resident of Negaunee, passed away on March 29th, 2022, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility under the loving care of Lake Superior Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by friends.

Susan was born on July 15th, 1960, to Robert A. and Judith (Freeman) Douglas in Detroit, Michigan. She was a 1978 graduate of Rockford High School, a 1981 graduate of Ferris State University, and a 1988 graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law. In 1990, Susan accepted a career law clerk position with the US District Court Western District of Michigan in Marquette and deemed herself a “Yooper.” In 1995, she opened the Upper Michigan office of Plunkett & Cooney, PC, where she focused her practice on tort liability and insurance defense. In 2003, Susan then moved to the office of Kitch Drutchas Wagner Valitutti and Sherbrook where she practiced employment law and medical malpractice defense. She became a principal in the firm in 2005. Susan was proud of the work she did for her clients and had an outstanding trial record. She was moved regularly by the many “thank yous” she received from her clients. She was a member of the State Bar of Michigan and participated in a variety of committees over the course of her career. She particularly enjoyed giving presentations on employment and health law. Her law practice was extremely important to her, and she was very well respected by her peers. It was with regret that she had to retire early due to her health issues. In addition to her dedication to the law, she enjoyed reading, knitting, and was a talented landscape painter. Susan loved being outdoors camping, hiking and sitting around a campfire. She was an avid baseball fan and a diehard Detroit Tigers supporter, attending games whenever she could. She looked forward to spring training in Lakeland, Florida every year. She recently rescued two cats and named one of them “Miggy” after her favorite Tigers player. Susan’s greatest joy in life was her daughter Adrienne. She loved being a mom and considered it her greatest achievement. She was so proud to be able to see Adrienne graduate from NMU this past December. She always looked forward to and enjoyed the vacations together, as well as, their many drives listening to Taylor Swift. She was also a devoted stepmom to Donald MacGregor, Steven MacGregor, James (Kasey) MacGregor, Karyn (Dan) Horan and Patrick MacGregor and loved being a grandma to Natalie and Marshall.

In addition to her daughter, Adrienne Douglas MacGregor (Negaunee), Susan is survived by her father, Robert A. Douglas (Rockford, MI), her brother, Ron (Loretta) Douglas (Zionsville, IN) and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother, Judy, her dear sister and best friend, Sandy Korcal and brother, Robert B. Douglas.

The family would like to thank the Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility staff for their incredible loving care and Lake Superior Hospice for their compassion at the end of her life. Susan’s beautiful smile and outgoing personality will be missed by those who loved her.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, April 4th, 2022, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services, with visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with sharing memories at 1:00 pm.
