Harry Koenig , M.D.

ISHPEMING, MI / MILWAUKEE, WI – He was born on May 18th, 1926, in Brooklyn, NY, to Emanuel and Millie Koenig. He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1942 and received a B.S. degree from the University of Michigan in 1945 and an M. D. degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy both on active duty and in the V-12 program from 1943 to 1946. Following graduation, he interned at Harper Hospital in Detroit. In 1950, he accepted a surgical research fellowship at Indianapolis General Hospital.

For a brief period, he assisted Dr. A.S. Narotzky, in Ishpeming, in the practice of general medicine prior to entering the Air Force in October 1951. Upon release from active duty in 1953, he joined the staff of Ohio State University Hospitals as a resident in ophthalmology. In 1956, he concluded his training at Northwestern University Hospitals in Chicago as chief resident in ophthalmology and became an associate of Dr. Daniel Hornbogen in Marquette. In 1958, he opened an office in Ishpeming and remained in practice until his retirement in 1989.

Dr. Koenig was a member of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He was a former chief of staff of Bell Memorial Hospital and a past president of the Marquette-Alger County Medical Society. He was a member of Temple Beth Sholom.

Dr. Koenig served as a volunteer ophthalmologist with FOCUS in Haiti in 1968 and with the Catholic Medical Mission in St. Lucia in 1970.

Surviving are his wife; Debbie Koenig, formerly of Ishpeming, a daughter; Karen Zwecker (Warren) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; a son; Dr. Steven Koenig (Debra) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son; Michael, in 2009.
