Rosemary Smale

Rosemary was born on December 6th, 1934, in DeTour Village, MI. She was an only child, born to the late Goldmon and Madeleine (Goetz) Lehman. Rosemary was a 1953 graduate of DeTour Village High School. She received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northern Michigan University in education.

Rosemary met Lloyd W. Smale on a blind date, when she was 16 years old and he was 19 years old. They were the love of each other’s lives. On September 15th, 1953, they married at Sacred Heart Church in DeTour Village. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage together.

Rosemary worked for the Gwinn Public Schools as an Elementary and Special Education Teacher, retiring in June of 1993.

She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn. In her free time, she enjoyed baking, quilting, reading, and decorating her home. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Rosemary is survived by her children, Marlene (Mark) Breit of Gwinn, Lloyd (Lisa) Smale, Jr. of Munising, Marcia (Roger) Hart of Gwinn, Paul Smale of Gwinn, Michele (Gerry) Zaborowske of Gwinn, and Carrie (Ernesto) Galvez of Great Falls, MT; also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lloyd, on December 7th, 2021.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., in the Baraga Room of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., in the church. Her dear family friend, Rev. Allen Mott, will be officiating. Spring burial will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.
