Rudolph “Rudy” Nyman

ISHPEMING, MI – Rudolph “Rudy” Nyman, 94, of Ishpeming, passed away peacefully at home, on Monday morning, January 24th, 2022. His loving wife, Jean, was at home with him as he entered eternal life.

Rudy was born October 7th, 1927, in Munising to Frank and Lempi (Maki) Nyman. He attended Eben area schools and worked on several farms and logging camps before volunteering for the Navy during World War II. Rudy served as a Seabee in Guam, Saipan, and the Philippines from March 1945 to June 1946.

Rudy worked at several mines during his career, both copper and iron ore in Michigan and Arizona. Most of his career was spent with CCI at the Mather B, Republic, and Tilden mines. He retired from the Tilden as a mechanic in 1988.

On September 12th, 1964, he married the love of his life, Jean. The two were never apart during their 57-year marriage. During their time together they traveled throughout the United States in their motorhome, and later spent their summers visiting U.P. casinos and campgrounds in their 5th wheeler. Working hard was Rudy’s favorite pastime and passion. He was happiest when cutting/hauling wood or working on his property cutting new trails for the four-wheeler or snowmobiles. He and Jean built their retirement log home single handedly, while they were in their 60’s. Taking all of the logs from the property he built the home on. Besides family, Rudy’s second passion was to his devoted Detroit Tigers. He and Jean were truly devoted fans, watching every game on television. Even though they were in their early 90’s, they knew the names of each player. They always knew what time the game was being broadcast and that games starting pitcher. Whenever family came to visit during baseball season, the Tigers were always on the TV. When fall came, he was an avid NFL fan, watching both Packer and Lion games. Since he made it to Lambeau Field for a Packer game, we’ll say he leaned toward the Green & Gold.

Surviving is his wife- Barbara “Jean” (Swenor) Nyman; daughters- Barbara Jean Morrison of Iron Mountain, Janice (Jim) Kippola of Negaunee, Mary Kay (Mark “Gart”) Charbonneau of Norway, MI; sons- Wayne Basal of Ishpeming, Rudy (Delcene) Nyman of Appleton, WI; grandchildren- Jim (Kimberly) Jandron of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Dawn (Jimmy) McNut of Norman, OK, Pennie Lake of Rapid River, Megan (Chris) Penney of Negaunee, Jim (Rose) Kippola of St. Paul, MN, Travis Brown of Iron Mountain, Kortney (Calvin) Manuel of Appleton, WI, Brett Nyman of Peoria, AZ, along with several great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three daughters- Frances Marie Nyman, Jill (Jandron) Nyman, Pam (LeMay) Nyman, and brothers- Henry Nyman, Harold Nyman, and Clarence Nyman.

Honoring Rudy’s wishes, there will be no public services at this time. A graveside service with military honors will be performed in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Slapneck.
