M. June Altmann

MARQUETTE, MI – Margaret June Altmann, age 96, of Marquette, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 9th, 2022, at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility, in the loving, comforting care of her family.

June was born September 20th, 1925, in Houghton, the first child of Frederick William and Zoria Emily (DeMarse) Boesler. When she was six, the family moved to Marquette. At about age 11, June decided she did not want to walk from their new North Marquette home to attend Froebel School when John D. Pierce was so much closer. Armed with determination and her excellent report card, June presented herself to the principal at Pierce requesting and thereby getting enrolled in the school all on her own. She remained a top student right to graduation. June continued her education at Northern Normal College (now Northern Michigan University), receiving her Bachelor’s Degree. Her first teaching assignment was with the Munising schools, teaching home economics. She met George Altmann at a New Year’s Eve party and the couple was united in marriage on June 26th, 1948, at St. Peter Cathedral. The couple first lived in Milwaukee where George was finishing his Bachelor’s Degree at Marquette University. Upon his graduation, the couple returned to Marquette where George joined the family business, Altmann Typewriter and Adding Machine Service. June became immersed in her roles of wife, mom, and homemaker, later venturing into the workforce when the children were older. She joined her husband at Altmann Typewriter, where she served as bookkeeper until retiring in the late 1980’s. June especially loved doing things for her family. She was a talented gardener, cook, baker and seamstress. Her grandchildren and daughters cherish the old fashioned recipes she used. While her children were young, she spent countless evenings at her dining room table sewing many of their clothes. Both George and June enjoyed the company of family and friends and were actively involved in their community. They were fortunate to have had High Street neighbors who formed a growing friendship group that raised their children together and had many years of gatherings as lifelong close friends, whose children even now continue those connections. June’s “Lunch Bunch” was a fountain of enduring strength for the wonderful neighborhood women, continuing even as some of their ages reached into their 90’s. As their children grew up, they called June and George “NMU hockey groupies”. Family activities and visits were planned around the Northern Hockey team schedule and George’s fishing expeditions and that included one of the births of one of the grandchildren. The couple held season tickets to many NMU sports, following the hockey teams to Alaska one January, as well as, to the East coast, Colorado, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.

June was also a member of St. Peter Cathedral, Golden Wildcat Club, Blue Line Club, AAUW, and the Renew Group at the Cathedral.

June is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Daligga of Huntington Woods, MI and Cathy (Mike) Schweig of Oxford, MI; daughter-in-law, Sue Altmann of Marquette; beloved grandchildren, Emily Daligga (Tim Sullivan) of Rochester, MN, Edward “Teddy” Daligga (Sara Dabkowski) of San Jose, CA, Kelsey Schweig (Tony Ribaudo) of Denver, CO, Dylan Schweig (Samantha Caligwri) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Sierra Schweig of Dillon, CO; cherished great- grandchildren, Leo Sullivan, Archer Daligga, and Zoe Daligga; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her husband, George Altmann, Jr., in 2003; her son, Michael Altmann in 2011; a sister and brother-in-law, Vivian and Warren Poland and her brother, Frederick “Ted” Boesler.

The family especially wishes to thank the loving caregivers at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living for the seven years of consistent support, comfort and great kindness that June and family experienced with them.

A memorial service will be held this summer, date to be determined later.

In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to be directed to UPAWS (Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter), P.O. Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855 or the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
