MARQUETTE, MI – Edward Duane Voet, age 80, lifelong Marquette resident, entered eternal life Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, at Brookridge Assisted Living Facility, in the loving, comforting care of his family. He battled Parkinson’s disease for 17 years before his death.

Born June 25th, 1941, in Marquette, son of Edward “Duke” and Margaret (Johnson) Voet. He graduated from Bishop Baraga High School, Class of 1959. His working career began at Park Cemetery as a groundskeeper. Subsequent employment includes working for Malandrone Construction and five years of service for the Marquette Fire Department. Ed’s longest employment was with the LS&I Railroad as a Congineer from which he retired in 2003 after 40 years.

Throughout his lifetime, Ed was an avid participant and fan of baseball. Over the years, Ed spent numerous hours at the baseball field coaching, where he is remembered for yelling “spit in the glove” and was an active member of the Marquette Oldtimers Softball team. For many years he served as a baseball umpire for the Marquette Little League, fast and slow pitch softball, MHSAA, and Marquette Legion Baseball. He especially enjoyed following the sports activities of his children and grandchildren and even had the pleasure of umpiring with granddaughter, Ciara. Ed was also a dedicated Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings fan, as well as a member of the “Rail of Knowledge” at NMU Hockey and could be heard yelling “shoot the puck”.

Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis DePetro, whom he married on August 8th, 1964; his four children: Gina (Wes Mutch) Voet of Marquette, Linda (Danny) Santiago of Fort Worth, Donna (Lee) Ballon of Marquette, and Joseph (Jeanne) Voet of Westland; his grandchildren: Kortney (Andrew) Markkola, Ciara (Erin Powers) Kangas, Dayne (Megan Osborne) Santiago, Zoee Santiago, Brenna (Randy) Trepanier, Rocco Voet, Alex (Jessica) Mutch, Nate Mutch, Amber Santiago, Jess (Kayla) Musielak-Hanold; great-grandchildren: Kinsley Markkola, Dio Santiago, Emma Trepanier, Enzo Trepanier, Everly Trepanier, Jackson Mutch, Adaline Mutch, Domynyck Santiago, Hunter Trepanier, Hayden Trepanier, Abe Musielak-Hanold; his two sisters: Edith Kalohn of Lake Orion and Betty Murray of Marquette; a sister-in-law, Frances Voet of Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Alan Voet; a grandson, James Voet; brothers, Ralph and Bruce Voet; sister-in-law, Margaret Voet; brother- and sister-in-law, Jack and Joyce Brugman; brother- and sister-in-law, Raymond and June DePetro; brothers-in-law, Donald and Robert DePetro.

Pallbearers will be Dayne Santiago, Rocco Voet, Andrew Markkola, Randy Trepanier, James Brugman and Derrick DePetro.

It was Eddie’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to Marquette Little League Baseball, 1310 Pioneer Road., Marquette, MI 49855 and/or Marquette Legion Baseball, 700 W. Bluff Street, Marquette, MI 49855.

The family will receive relatives and friends in the Bishop’s Room located at St. Peter Cathedral on Saturday, December 11th, beginning at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 pm with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber, pastor, as celebrant. A reception will follow in Cathedral Hall.
