Donald L. Sherbinow

SKANDIA, MI – Donald L. Sherbinow, age 84, of Skandia, passed away Saturday, November 20th, 2021, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Don was born March 16th, 1937, in Eagle Mills, Michigan, a son of Edward and Gertrude (Mills) Sherbinow. His father was a logger and Don was raised in various locations where his father worked. When Don was ten, his father passed away. His mother later remarried and Don again was being raised and also worked in several places, among them the McFarland area and Marquette where his grandmother lived. He entered the US Army and was stationed in Korea and Germany, receiving medals in pistol marksmanship, expert machine gun, and tank operation. Upon his honorable discharge, Don moved to San Francisco where he drove Greyhound Bus on the route from San Francisco to Las Vegas. He later moved to Florida where he was employed as a truck driver and worked on pipelines. He finally relocated to Marquette where he met his future wife, Carol Reynolds. The couple made their home in Skandia where they managed a hobby farm and Don worked as a equipment operator for the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO). He retired in 1996, after 28 years of service with the company. Following retirement, he helped with odd jobs in the area just to keep himself busy. Throughout the years, Don had many hobbies and special interests. When he was in his 30’s, he often entered barrel racing competitions with his horse, Trixie, a horse that knew the routine quite well. Don often said all he had to do was hold on to the saddle horn and Trixie would do the rest, and she did. Later on, he farmed and entered beef cattle in fair competitions, and in the 1990’s, Don and his sons competed in mud drag racing events. However, his most fulfilling times were spent with his grandkids and he loved any opportunity to be with them, whether it be as a babysitter or mentoring then on something he wanted them to enjoy.

Don is survived by his sons, Ernest Sherbinow of Skandia and Archie (Jennifer) Sherbinow of Chippewa Falls, WI; his grandchildren, Madeleine, Marliegh, A.J., and Jasmin Sherbinow; his sister, Linda (Emerson) Fleury of Marquette; sisters-in-law, Lois Sherbinow of Marquette and Linda Sherbinow of Half Way Location; brother-in-law, Alan Reynolds; several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death his parents; stepfathers, Charles Draver and Marvin Thompson; wife, Carol Sherbinow; and brothers, Gerald and Gary Sherbinow.

The family will receive relatives and friends at a Celebration of Life gathering at the Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Saturday, December 4th, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. There will be no formal service and this will be an informal time for the sharing of memories, conversation, and food.
