James Hawley

CHATHAM / SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – James William “Bill” Hawley, age 80, of Sault Ste. Marie and formerly of Chatham, died early Friday morning, September 24, 2021, in the Emergency Room, of War Memorial Hospital, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born on January 10, 1941, in Marquette, to Pee Wee and Jeanette (Dennis) Hawley. Bill grew up in Eben and graduated from Eben High School in 1959. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from February 1961, until February 1965. Bill returned to Munising after serving in the Marines and worked at CCI for twenty-two years. He also worked for the State of Michigan before beginning employment with Kimberly Clark. Bill retired from Kimberly Clark as a maintenance foreman in 1998. He married Lynn Marie Savola on May 4, 1990. Bill was a former member of the D.A.V. and Munising Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, vegetable gardening, and raising beef cattle.

He is survived by his wife of over thirty-one years – Lynn Hawley of Sault Ste. Marie; children – Merry Hawley of Traverse City, James (Marcy) Hawley of Springfield, NE, Noel (Abe) Mahoski of Munising, Jeremy (Terri) Savola of Sault Ste. Marie, and Derek Hawley of Chatham; grandchildren – Autumn Decker, Jacob Mahoski, Lorena (Isaac) Cole, Izaak Mahoski, Brennan Nobles, Whitney and Braden Hawley, Kaylee Savola, Evan Stevenson, Chevi Savola, and Cyrus Savola; great-grandchildren – Kanye and Kendrick Cole and Aurora Moreland; siblings – Joe (Phyllis) Hawley of Chatham, Ann (Rusty) Atherton of Gladstone, Susie (Ron) Dittmer of Vancouver, WA, Bob (Donette) Hawley of Oxford, MI, and Duane “Chick” (Gina) Laakso of Limestone.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brothers – Frank Hawley and Tom (Kitty) Hawley.

Services will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising, on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. The Marine Corps League and American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will render military honors at 2:00 p.m., followed by Bill’s funeral serviced officiated by Deacon Tom Moseley. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary at a later date.
