Georgiana M. Hebert

ISHPEMING, MI – Georgiana M. Hebert, age 80, formerly of 111 Bluff St., Ishpeming, passed away on Friday, September 10th, 2021, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, where she had resided since this past June.

Georgiana was born in Negaunee, MI, on June 12, 1941, a daughter of the late Florence (Anderson) and Leo Nurmi. She was a graduate of Republic High School, Class of 1959. Georgie married Robert F. Tarvainen of Covington in September of 1959, and they had 4 children. While living in Covington she served as a Sunday school and VBS teacher, taught knitting as a 4-H leader and was active with the VFW Auxiliary. She went on to further her education and received an associate degree in human services from Suomi College in 1986, and a business degree from NMU in 1999. Georgie worked in adult foster care in L’Anse and Ontonagon and as a home health aide for the Baraga Co., Memorial Hospital in L’Anse and Arcadia Home Health, in the Ishpeming area. Georgie married Leonard J. Hebert, of Ishpeming on January 31, 2003.

Georgiana was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she had been active in the Church Choir. Georgiana loved music and in addition to the church choir, she previously sang with the Suomi Choir and more recently with the Seed Sowers. She was an active member of the Monday Grief Share for well over 11 years, and would regularly sing for the group. Georgie enjoyed playing cards, especially with her cribbage groups, along with knitting items for her family.

Georgiana is survived by her children, Robert (Sandra) Tarvainen of Ishpeming, Scott (Sayuri) Tarvainen of Japan, Cheryl (Dave) Morin of Niagara, WI, Craig (Heather) Tarvainen of Chassell; daughter-in- law, Julie Derocha of Bonduel, WI; four sisters, Hannah Wixtrom of Negaunee; Rita Kerkela of Republic; Sandra (Joe) Couveau of Republic; Karen Perry of Ishpeming; brother-in- law, Keith Perry of Republic; 14 grandchildren; Mandy (Eric) Dombrowski of DePere, WI, Philip (Audrey) Tarvainen of Highland Mills, NY, Eric (Chelsea) Tarvainen of Petoskey, MI, Leonard (Jessica) Hebert of Green Bay, WI, Kaarina Tarvainen of Japan, Freddie (Sarah) Norman of Niagara, WI, Jim (Ema) Norman of Kingsford, Thomas Norman of Niagara, WI, Laura Norman of Philadelphia, PA, Elexsonna (Clint) Van Alstine of Pelkie, Xackery Tarvainen of Cameron, NC, Xavier Tarvainen of Alma, MI, Samuel and Sophia Tarvainen of Chassell,an aunt Barbara Roy of Ishpeming, along with numerous step grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Georgiana was preceded in death by her parents, Leo Nurmi and Florence Delliss, husband, Leonard Hebert in 2007, sister, Nancy Perry and “adopted sister”, Karen Richards.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming from 9:30 – 11:00am on Monday, September 27, 2021, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am, with Rev. Fr. Ryan Ford officiating. Interment will take place at the Republic Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the Mass in the K/D Hall at the church.
